The Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge have a number of new and unique features. For those who prefer to have all their photos and videos in one place, the phones have expandable memory of up to 200GB with a micro SD card[2]. The phones are also water-resistant in case of those accidental drops and splashes[3].
I currently have a galaxy s7 edge which I purchased from abroad, and all I had to do to use it in the US was buy a SIM card (which I did from At&t). I'm looking to buy the galaxy s10 and use it in the US and when I travel internationally, therefore, I'm looking for an unlocked phone.
Sure, the Galaxy S8+ is official and on sale, and has been for many months now. But that doesn't mean last year's Galaxy S7 edge isn't a good performer even in this day and age. And since it's older, the deals for it are much better than for its successor.
Case in point: today only, Best Buy is holding a sale on S7 edge units for Verizon and Sprint. You need to become a customer of one of those carriers, or to already be one. If so, you can grab the S7 edge for just $7.99 per month with two-year installments.
Can you repair a phone that wasn't bought at Best BuyIn most cases, yes. At this time, however, we are unable to perform repairs on phones from outside of the United States. To see if your phone qualifies for a repair, it is best to check your model number. If it ends in A, V, T, P or U (U1 for Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+ and newer), we should be able to work on it, as a general guideline.
The new phones will come in three colors: Silver titanium, black onyx, and gold platinum. However, while the S7 edge will be available in all three colors in the U.S., the S7 will be limited to black onyx and gold platinum.
The company took ergonomics into account when building the S7 and S7 edge, explaining that what often prevented people from moving to bigger screens was difficulty holding the device. Samsung believes that the refined design will allow you to easily hold either smartphone and make it easier to fit them into a pocket or purse.
The U.S. versions of the S7 and S7 edge phones come with Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow installed, Snapdragon 820 processor with 4GB of RAM, Bluetooth version 4.2 LE, ANT+, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac (2.4/5GHz), and USB 2.0.
Both the S7 and S7 edge come with Samsung Pay, which the company recently shared is being used by 5 million people and has processed over $500 million in its first 6 months. The devices also support NFC and MST. The mobile security technology KNOX is preinstalled, providing protection for companies whose employees bring their own devices to work.
With the S7 edge, specifically, Samsung has added several new user panels, including panels for applications, tasks, people (contacts), as well as third-party panels (several of which were already available in previous Galaxy series). You can have up to nine columns activated, and the company has said that edges can be created based on your location and Wi-Fi, allowing for further personalization.
To mark the introduction of the S7 and S7 edge, Samsung is offering a special promotion: If you purchase a device between February 23 and March 18, the company will give you a free Gear VR powered by Oculus headset, along with a six game bundled package.
These are top-of-the-line phones. The S7 is 5.6 x 2.75 x 0.3 in. with a 5.1-in. screen; the S7 Edge is 5.9 x 2.9 x 0.3 in. with a 5.7-in. screen. The S7's screen is flat; the Edge version is rounded along both long edges. The S7 weighs 5.36 oz.; the Edge weighs 5.54 oz., not a particularly noticeable difference. The phones themselves are sleek and welcoming; they felt well balanced in my hand.
And as in previous models, the rounded screens of the S7 Edge have functions. Depending how and where you swipe from the edge, you can read news or sports headlines, get quick access to top contacts or frequently used functions. The Edge has a Do Not Disturb mode that shows the time only along one of its edges. It's really quite subtle and lovely. And swiping up and down along an edge when the phone is asleep will show you how many emails you have waiting and show a news crawl.
There's hardly a corner on these phones. The sides are rounded and fit comfortably in the hand. The power button is on the right edge, perfectly placed, and volume buttons are along the left edge. The SIM/SD card drawer is on the top; the speaker, micro-USB port and earphone jack are on the bottom.
Both phones have a slightly raised oblong Home button/fingerprint sensor in the center of the phones' front bottom edge. The Chooser and Back capacitor buttons are on the left and right, respectively, of the Home button, and light up only when they're touched. This is something of a UI problem because there's no indication that the buttons exist, let alone their function, until you use them.
The main camera on the back of the phones -- in the center laterally and about a half-inch from the phones' top edge -- cause a barely-there 0.5mm bump, significantly less prominent than in previous models. It's a 12MP camera that's been built with low-light shooting in mind. The camera's got an aperture of f/1.7 and fewer pixels on the same-size sensor as the S6, which lets the remaining pixels be larger. That's key for photo quality.
(Left) Dragging from the screen edge of the S7 Edge brings up a set of quick-choice icons. (Right) The TouchWiz flavor of Android 6.0 puts the Google entry box a third of the way down the page and the Apps drawer at the bottom right.
Maybe the neatest trick, though, are the keyboards. Samsung has taken advantage of its high pixel count and resolution to shrink the keyboard in a way that doesn't force you to reach all the way across the screen to type with one hand. The keyboard stretches about three-fourths of the way across the screen (and includes a fifth numeric row), which makes it easy to type one-handedly. And best of all, you can choose which side of the phone the keyboard appears on, making life easier no matter which hand you type with. It is truly a beautiful hack.
