An overview of the steps and operations that the forensic medicine expert performs at a death scene should be documented. Reporting the methods used and the results found may help a medical examiner or a law enforcement agency make a more informed decision related to the handling of a death scene. Clear and concise reporting of findings to law enforcement is essential. Undoubtedly, the number of injuries will be less than anticipated because of autopsy or improper death scene investigation at the scene of death. If a death is questionable, the following events should be considered: 1) recovering a body; 2) the presence of a gunshot wound on the body; 3) sensory perception of the death scene (decedent’s body and clothing); 4) a crime scene investigation (blunt trauma, sharp trauma, and fire); 5) the need for a toxicology screen; and 6) the need for an autopsy. All evidence that is in the best interest of the decedent’s family should be collected and preserved for a possible court case. A brief documentation of a death scene investigation as to the location of the body, the body position in the bed or chair, the presence of blood or evidence of staining, a body inspection by the forensic medicine expert, observation of the bedclothes, and the cause of death should be noted. The medical examiner or a person handling the body finds a body on the floor of a bedroom or walk-in closet. The body is naked and the clothing is tangled with bedclothes. Is there evidence that the death is a homicide? If so, a homicide involving a firearm should be investigated. If so, proceed with a gunshot wound determination. If this is not possible, then proceed with a trauma investigation. Record the location of the gunshot wound, the manner of death, presence of powder stippling or other tissue staining, the distance and angle from the gun muzzle, the location, depth, and abrasion pattern of entry and exit wounds, evidence of fire or fire damage, and presence of ligature marks, contusions, crush marks, or other blunt trauma marks. If a firearm is present, identify it. If not, identify all other weapons involved, the caliber of the weapon involved, and the condition of the firearm, i.e., functional, idle, or broken. Document the victim's position and the direction of travel of the bullet wedged in the body. d2c66b5586
