Carman scanners have been available since the early 1990s, and have been used by many automotive enthusiasts. The first car scanner in the market to appear was the Carman Alstrom, which was first released in 1991. The unit allows the user to read and erase multiple trouble codes on his car's OBDII-I indicator port, and is capable of reading and storing multiple trouble codes. This is accomplished by use of a software program called Alstrom-J. The user can select the car model and the equipment to be scanned, and save the scanned content to a file. It also includes a considerable amount of technical documentation describing how each of its functions operate.
A very comprehensive scan tool is Carman Auto i-700, which is the most powerful version of Carman's scanners. This scanner has been created with the most comprehensive functions available for reading and erasing the code stored in the car's control system. Carman Auto i-700 provides the capability of reading and erasing the most common types of DTCs, self-diagnosis of the sensor-modules and the functionality to read and store DTCs. Carman Auto i-700 is the most powerful scanner of its type, and can be used for a wide range of vehicles, including Japanese and Korean vehicles. It is available in three models: Japanese, Korean and European.
All these versions of Carman scanner have G4 modem and of course a USB. The European version has a DIN-8 connector which is the standard connector for most of the new cars and some of the European cars still have the OBD-II connector. So it can be used for reading Japanese and Korean models as well. This is my personal favorite scanner.
Some car manufacturers have chosen to make the car's on-board data-logging system (and its diagnostic routines) proprietary and have included a graphical user interface, written in the programming language C++, which allows the user to view and correct errors detected by the system. Car manufacturers also provide an interface through which the user can perform a diagnostic check of the vehicle's system and can change parameters in the vehicle's diagnostic system, write codes and reprogram the car's ECU. However, these interfaces are often in different languages and therefore require a good knowledge of the language in order to use them efficiently. The user therefore requires access to at least a basic knowledge of the carman's control system.
